Hillel D. Braude, MD, PhD Dr. Hillel Braude is an Integrative Medicine Doctor, Feldenkrais Practitioner and Neuro-Ethicist. Hillel is the Founder-Director of SomaticWell, an Integrative Medicine Clinic providing specialized treatments for infants and children with autism, and other neurodevelopmental disabilities. Hillel has published extensively in the field of Neuroethics, Somatics and Philosophy of Medicine. He is the author of Intuition in Medicine: A Philosophical Defense of Clinical Reasoning (The University of Chicago Press, 2012).
The Feldenkrais Method as Physiological Psychology in Practice – Research Insights
The Feldenkrais Method® is generally described as a form of somatic education or therapeutic practice designed to improve daily function. I propose, however, that the Feldenkrais Method® is a kind of practical physiological psychology. Formally, physiological psychology is a subdivision of behavioral neuroscience (biological psychology) that studies the neural mechanisms of perception and behavior through direct manipulation of the brains of nonhuman animal subjects in controlled experiments. This field of psychology takes an empirical and practical approach when studying the brain and human behavior. Considering the Feldenkrais Method® as a form of applied psycho-physiology provides a deeper grounding of its embodied methodology into the relation between brain and behavior than does defining it simply as a form of somatic education or therapeutic practice. Moreover, conceptualizing the Feldenkrais Method® as a form of psycho-physiology has positive implications both in terms of developing appropriate methodologies for its study, as well as using the Method itself to generate research hypotheses. This approach presents a means of incorporating the Feldenkrais Method® into generating actual psycho-physiological research, and not merely in terms of studying the results of its practice as a terminus ad quem.
